How easy is it to get planning permission in your part of the world? Here in the UK its pretty difficult to get new houses built unless you are one of those development companies – that probably have a councillor personal slush fund budget.

Well, building permits depend a lot on the local economy. They are approved by the city government based on the current economic development plan. Some areas may have a long approval time while others not far away have an easier approval process all depending on what the city council has in mind as far as growth.
How cheap can you get a house for in the U.S. I have seen on other real estate blogs houses for sale for as little as $8,000 and I remember a while back I was thinking of buying a few acres with some sort of wooden dwelling on it in Texas for $4,000.
Here in the UK, I looked on a property site and the cheapest house I could find was a small wooden bungalow for £30,000, which is probably about $45,000.
Now you can find a lot of properties for under $10,000 but they are not in very nice neighborhoods and usually need some work.
These are usually bank owned property and the previous owner may not have cared what condition the bank got it in.
It varies a lot depending on the particular area. In most areas of California it is still rare to see anything under $100,000.
